Though the U.K. has a reputation for being a smidge stuffier that the U.S., this year’s BAFTA ceremony included something Americans know mostly from major sporting events: a Kiss Cam.Stephen Fry was hosting the British answer to the Academy Awards for the eleventh time this year and, in an homage to the romantic February 14th date of the ceremony, called out certain names as a heart-shaped image of various BAFTA seatmates popped up on the screen. Leonardo DiCaprio—who was in high spirits thanks to a win both for himself and The Revenant—happily obliged Fry and landed a smooch on a slightly flustered Dame Maggie Smith.
DiCaprio and Smith weren’t the only BAFTA luminaries to oblige Fry. Bryan Cranston—no stranger to showy award season smooches—planted a nice theatrical kiss onJulianne Moore. But while friends like Moore and Cranston and—we imagine—relative strangers like Smith and DiCaprio were happy to play along, there was one real-life couple who wasn’t having it. Alicia Vikander andMichael Fassbender—who are so low key they hardly ever walk a red carpet together—declined to participate in the BAFTA lip locking.
And while Fry is a consummate host and we will forever cherish the gift of the Smith/DiCaprio smooch, we can’t help but wish there had been a Kiss Cam in the press room where BAFTA winners Kate Winslet and Idris Elba turned heads with this very cozy post-win pose.
