This year’s shortlist has been announced, with Compton rapper Lamar up for 11 in total, while Brits such as Ed Sheeran, Lianne La Havas, Jamie xx, Wolf Alice, James Bay and Muse are also listed
The former Grammy winner Alicia Keys announced the four major nominations on CBS news on 7 December, before the full list was revealed.
Lamar is up for song of the year for his single Alright, as well as best album for To Pimp a Butterfly. He has also been nominated for best rap performance, best rap song (for Alright), best rap album, best music video (again, for Alright) and best rap collaboration (for These Walls). Technically the Compton rapper is up for another four Grammys – Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood, which is up for best pop duo/group and best video, Flying Lotus’ Never Catch Me, nominated for best dance recording, as well as a writing credit on Kanye West’s All Day, which is up for best rap song.
Taylor Swift, meanwhile, picks up nominations for record of the year, album of the year, song of the year, best music video (for Bad Blood), best pop solo performance, best pop duo/group performance and best pop vocal album.
R&B singer The Weeknd is up for seven awards: record of the year and best pop solo performance for Can’t Feel My Face, album of the year and best urban contemporary album for Beauty Behind the Madness, best R&B performance, best song written for visual media, and best R&B song for Earned It (50 Shades of Grey).
The Australian singer Courtney Barnett gets her first nomination, and will be up against Brit award winner James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly and Meghan Trainor in the best new artist category.
At 2015’s event, Sam Smith was the year’s big winner, taking home four awards, while Beck, Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams were also honoured.
The awards show ceremony will take place on 15 February.
