Though a leaked version of the video was floating around the internet today, HBO released an official HD teaser for Game of Thrones Season 6 during the splashy two-hour premiere of Vinyl. And though it doesn’t seem to reveal much, there are a few things we learned here.
This teaser is right in line with a few things we’ve seen from the Season 6 ad campaign for Game of Thrones. First of all—unless the House of Black and White Face Room full of Starks, Snows, and Lannisters is an upcoming Arya vision—there’s no actual footage from the new season here. This aligns with HBO’s increased level of secrecy this season. Without book clues (or “spoilers”) to guide viewers along the way, HBO could pull off a good deal of surprises this season. And with zero new footage here, the lack of the usual casting announcement, and the absence of some key figures at Comic-Con, it seems that secrecy is the watchword for Season 6.
But there are still a few key clues in this teaser. First of all, as has been the case with other Season 6 promotion, Jon Snow is front and center. Whether that means Kit Harington will return is up to you to decide, but the advertising is making it pretty impossible to forget the Lord Commander.
But Jon’s isn’t the only ghost haunting Season 6. Somecasting news, set reports, and official photos make it clear that visions and flashbacks will be keeping the dead Starks very much alive this year. That’s why, for example, Isaac Hempstead-Wright’s Bran is seen standing in the courtyard of what looks like Winterfell in this official Season 6 image.
Under the tutelage of Max Von Sydow’s Three-Eyed Raven, Bran will be able to project (on his own two feet!) into the events of his family’s past—and possible future. So look for the legacy of Ned Stark too loom large this year. As for the presence of Michelle Fairley’s Catelyn Stark in this new teaser, well, that’s a whole different kettle of conspiracy theory fish.
The last lesson we can learn from this teaser is thateveryone’s head is on the chopping block this season. In previous years book readers, at least, were prepared for the death of the Starks, Oberyn Martell, Khal Drogo, etc. But this year? Well, it’s anyone’s guess and in that final shot HBO wants to make it clear that even your surviving favorites probably won’t make it through the entire season in one piece. Game of Thrones Season 6 premieres April 24.
